North American Biodynamic Apprenticeship Program > Participating Mentor Farms

The Kimberton CSA is one of the oldest CSAs in the country and still strives to fulfill the original vision that was set forth by its founders in 1987. To that end, we do not participate in any farmers markets since all of our produce goes to the membership. The garden has a definite community feeling, almost park-like, since members are welcome to come walk the grounds any time and any day. We are a short walk from downtown Kimberton village, across the creek from Kimberton Hills Camphill, surrounded by the pastures of Seven Stars Farm of biodynamic/organic yogurt fame, and across the street from the Kimberton Waldorf School, all of which make the garden a part of the larger Kimberton community.

Size of farm: 10 acres.

Diversity of produce and livestock: We grow a very large selection of annual vegetables from May to November for our 200 member families. Also included in the CSA share are a variety of you-pick vegetables and small fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and blackberries. We also raise several batches of broiler chickens and turkeys and care for a large flock of laying hens.

Apprenticeship details: Internships run from March until the week before Thanksgiving or mid-November, but other arrangements are possible. The work week is Monday through Friday, plus Saturday morning until noon. The actual schedule varies somewhat according to the season. We start shortly after sunrise and work 9hrs. with a half-hour lunch break in between. Most years we have 3 interns who share a furnished apartment in the farmhouse that is a few minutes walk from the garden. Stipend of $100/wk with housing and food from the farm included. $500 bonus for those who work the entire season.
