Event Description

Presented in collaboration with Agrarian Trust.

What is the commons? What is the public trust? How do such broad and lofty concepts play out on the ground for the incoming generation of organic and biodynamic farmers contending with the climate change and market pressures? Who are our allies and precedent-setters as we look at structural solutions to the land access dilemma we face? Laws of nature are well known to those who make a living from the land directly. Can our judicial branch represent the moral authority of the people? Can contracts, new economic forms, and the sharing economy factor into our shared governance of the farmland commons? Our speakers will help orient us to issues of popular sovereignty, resource rights, native American codes of ethics, and historical examples of successful commons-based governance systems.
