Josh Volk has been working on and managing small farms around the country for the last 20 years, studying the systems that make them work. As an apprentice farmer, he took part in the Biodynamic Association of Northern California's apprentice training program, which gave him the opportunity to see biodynamics in practice on farms around the region and to learn from some of the most experienced biodynamic farmers in California. For the past 10 years, he has traveled in the US and abroad, consulting with farmers and researchers, teaching workshops, and writing articles. He is the author of Compact Farms: 15 Proven Plans for Market Farms on 5 Acres or Less. Using his background as a mechanical engineer, he also designs and builds simple tools for small farms.
