By using concepts and practices derived from biodynamic agriculture, nurseries of all scales can evolve into using more sustainable and much healthier growing methods. Commercial nurseries often use cocktails of chemical pesticides, fertilizers, artificial growth regulators, and unsustainably harvested, sterile container mix ingredients to produce plants for home gardens and commercial landscapes. While many farmers have transitioned into biodynamic/organic approaches, nurseries have been slower to evolve because of the unique challenges presented by growing plants in containers.
What temperature should the water be for biodynamic sprays? What is a good technique for stirring? When should we spray? These are simple questions, so simple that aspects of them are often overlooked. That's not the case in Australia. Due to a harsh climate and poorer soils, everyday farmers have embraced BD because it works. Currently, over 2 million acres are being farmed bio-dynamically there. This workshop will look at the philosophy and the basic techniques they have developed to ensure high quality results
Our times are calling for a radical new vision of society that can bring business, culture and government into right relationship. One hundred years ago, Rudolf Steiner, the founder of biodynamics, brought forth a such a radical, holistic vision, sometimes called the Threefold Commonwealth. In this workshop we will give a broad overview of the Threefold Commonwealth and its guiding principles. We will also give examples of many current social initiatives that are inspired by this vision or working in harmony with its guiding principles.
Acequias are gravity-fed, communally managed irrigation systems that are related to the agri-cultures of Central Asia, the Middle East, and the Iberian Peninsula. Acequia culture in New Mexico is an amalgamation of Spanish, Arabic, Mexican, and Puebloan foods, traditions, and techniques and is an important part of the food security and economic base of the region, especially in rural areas. This presentation will illustrate the essence of acequia culture in terms of the practices, food traditions, and crops that offer lessons of resiliency in times of climate change.
In this workshop children will experience an original marionette play inspired by creation stories of the Native Americans. The story begins with an imagination of what happens when Crow brings the seed of corn to humankind. The people tend their gardens and the Sister Corn sustains them. It is an image of respect and awareness of the necessity and interdependence between Nature and the Human Being. Workshop based on the book Brother Crow, Sister Corn: Traditional American Indian Gardening by Carol Buchanan.
