Creating Age Appropriate Farm-Based Education Curricula

Featuring Stephen Payne and Dana Burns

A growing number of farms and schools are incorporating farm and garden based educational programs for children and youth. In this workshop, we will look at the developmental stages of the child as understood by Rudolf Steiner in order to create a framework for developing age appropriate, work related activities on the farm and in the garden. Our goal is to identify a healthy approach to fostering responsibility and a service-centered ethic in children.

BD Basics: Biodynamics and the Four Elements

Featuring Dennis Klocek

The four elements of earth, water, air and fire have deep implications for Biodynamic practices. The elements are energized by the three alchemical processes of salt, sulfur and mercury, and these processes form the basis for plant and mineral relationships. In this workshop, Dennis Klocek will explore these ideas as a foundation for seeing into Rudolf Steiner's Agriculture Course and use excerpts from the course to illustrate these alchemical concepts.

BD Basics: Understanding and Using the Nine Biodynamic Preparations

Featuring Hugh Courtney and Lloyd Nelson

What are the biodynamic preparations? Why, when and how should they be used? In this workshop, Hugh Courtney, founder of the Josephine Porter Institute for Applied Bio-Dynamics and Lloyd Nelson, a biodynamic farmer and educator in Hawai’i, will provide a comprehensive overview of the nine biodynamic preparations. We will begin with an investigation into the theoretical aspects of the preparations, discuss how they are made, and then explore the many ways to practically apply the preparations on farm or garden.

Solar Energy Based Farming with Draft Horses and Community

Featuring Steven and Gloria Decatur

Drawing on their 30+ years experience of operating a horse-powered biodynamic CSA farm, Stephen and Gloria Decater will discuss how to integrate work horses into a biodynamic farm organism. We will cover where to get training for horses and teamsters, the economics of farming with draft horses, and how horse farming interfaces with community farming.
