Best Practices for On-Farm Mentoring: Working with Interns and Apprentices

Primary tabs

Moderated by Thea Maria Carlson and featuring Cory Eichman, Janet Gamble, Harald Hoven, Henning Sehmsdorf

There is a surge of young people interested in becoming organic and biodynamic farmers, but few start out with the practical agricultural experience they need to succeed. Internships and apprenticeships can offer a mutually beneficial arrangement between aspiring and experienced farmers to fill this gap, but without clear expectations, good structure and attention to interpersonal dynamics, these relationships can go awry. In this workshop, four veteran farmer mentors will share strategies and tools they have developed to effectively teach and mentor the next generation of farmers, and help participants troubleshoot challenges they have encountered in working with interns and apprentices.
