Wednesday, April 28, 2021, from 4:00 pm to 5:50 pm PST / 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm EST

This webinar presented by Rachel and Steffen Schneider of the Institue for Mindful Agriculture will delve into the field of our food economy, and we will discuss questions of food accessibility and affordability. Is it acceptable that the most holistic way of growing food –biodynamics – results in products that are out of reach for most and are often considered exclusive niche products? Why is that and how can we find solutions?

All webinars offered by the Biodynamic Association are $10 to the general public. If you're able, please consider making a donation, during your registration, so that we can continue to provide the information, resources, and connection that are needed.

BDA members receive the additional discount, 10% off for Soil Builder Members, 20% for Seed Sower and above members. Membership is on a sliding scale, so you can join for as little as $5 and immediately receive access to membership benefits.

If you experience issues with internet access or unreliable service, you may still participate by calling in.

Interested but can't make the time? Don't fret! All webinars are recorded. Registered participants will receive a link to the video recording the day after the live session.

The Institute for Mindful Agriculture envisions a world where agriculture plays a central role in
the renewal of social life on our Earth. All projects that IMA undertakes work with a
methodology that acknowledges the need to tend the “three soils” given as a responsibility of
every human being. Tending our “ecological soils” involves discovering and practicing
restorative and health bringing practices and techniques on our agricultural soils. Tending to
our “social soils” asks of us to work together collaboratively and with deep listening and
speaking practices in order to solve our social and ecological challenges. Tending to our “inner
soils” asks of us to find the space and time for inner reflection so that we can attend with
presence of mind, heart and will, to all our tasks.

Steffen Schneider is Co-Director of the Institute for Mindful Agriculture, Director Emeritus of Hawthorne Valley Farm, and board member of Demeter USA. Steffen graduated from the Justus Von Liebig University in Giessen, Germany, with a master’s degree in agriculture and animal science in 1982. Steffen began his biodynamic career in Wisconsin in 1983, before joining the Hawthorne Valley Association in 1989. He was hired as the herd manager of the farm’s dairy herd and in 1994 became farm manager. Steffen was part of the team that brought the farm back to economic solvency and success in the early ’90s. He has served in senior leadership capacity for the past 20 years, allowing Hawthorne Valley to experience tremendous growth and diversification of its farming operations including a more recent major infrastructure upgrade of its farmstead. He took on the role of general manager of the farm branch in 2008. He was a key member of the team that brought the farm back from near insolvency to its present state. Steffen continues to teach biodynamics and has presented lectures around the world.

Rachel Schneider is Co-Director of the Institute for Mindful Agriculture and holds a masters degree in Waldorf education. Rachel has been part of management at Hawthorne Valley Farm for the past 20 years. She initiated and developed the farm’s CSA program, as well as served as one of the growers for the HVF market garden. In 2008, she combined her passion for education with her commitment to agriculture and started the Farm Learning Center, which provides professional training for beginning farmers as well as farm-based experiences for the general public.
