Dan Kaplan and Karen Romanowski met on the year-round farm crew at Farm & Wilderness Camps (F & W) in Plymouth, Vermont. They then apprenticed for Sam and Elizabeth Smith at Caretaker Farm, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and returned to F & W as the farm managers. They spent a year working on farms in Europe and then managed the Temple-Wilton Community Farm in New Hampshire before settling at Brookfield Farm in 1994. Brookfield Farm is a 100-acre mixed farm (livestock and horticulture). The farm produces over 250,000 of vegetables annually from 30 acres managed along biodynamic lines, maintains a herd of 10 Dexter/Angus cows, and produces 200 tons of compost annually. All of the production of the farm goes to a 500-share CSA, which is distributed from June to March.
