Head Grower Position—Vegetable General Manager—Canterbury, NH
We are a large diversified farm consisting of 50 dairy cows, 300 hogs and 1000 laying hens. We grow consistently 30 acres of grain (wheat is baked on farm in a wood fired brick oven), all our forages for the herd and 10 acres of vegetables. Our products are marketed at farmers markets, at our farm store, through wholesale accounts and through our CSA.
The Head Grower will be growing on flat river bottom soil with no rocks. The entire field can be irrigated with overhead irrigation. We own all the equipment required to operate the 10 acre piece.
3 allis chalmers G cultivating tractors, 1 Kubota 85 hp w front end loader, Imants Spader (6 ft), Disk Harrow (6ft), Buckeye bedshaper, tine weeder, basket weeder, finger weeder, plastic mulch layer, s tine cultivator, jang seeder, mechanical transplanter, various hand hoes and tools. 3 X 1000 ft Reel Rain over head irrigation.
The Head Grower should have all the skills required to grow a wide variety of high quality vegetables for our existing 100 member CSA. Our CSA presently runs from June through March. We have proper storage for root crops to get us through the winter. He/She needs to be very familiar with organic production techniques including but not limited to fertilization, pest control, record keeping and mechanical cultivation. The applicant needs to be interested in a long term position. He/She should have the ability to efficiently manage crew with a focus on quality. He/She should have the skills and the desire to grow to a 200-300 member CSA. The applicant will be required to build a budget and to work within that budget.
