Michael Fields Agricultural Institute and Stella Gardens Intern Program – 2013 –
New Deadline: April 1, 2013, although acceptance may begin immediately.

Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, East Troy, Wisconsin, is offering several internship opportunities to learn and work in Stella Gardens, a beautiful 2-acre market garden in East Troy, Wisconsin, specializing in perennial fruits and annual vegetables.  In this internship you will assist the garden manager with the daily tasks of greenhouse sowing and management, building raised beds, hand sowing and transplanting, irrigation, weeding, pest management, harvest, and post-harvest handling.  The majority of our work is done with hand tools to build strong bodies and an intimate understanding of the importance of healthy soil. We market our vegetables and fruit through an on-site farm stand and farmer’s market, and sell to local schools, CSAs, and other businesses. In return, our interns receive a monthly $500 stipend, on-site lodging (own room), and access to food from the gardens and a shared kitchen. All interns will also be enrolled in in Michael Fields Whole Farm Workshops  (http://www.michaelfields.org/whole-farm-workshop-schedule/) and in CRAFT (Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training, http://www.learngrowconnect.org/what/training/craft), and there will be additional visits to other organic or sustainable farms in the region, and work with cooperative farmers (beekeeping, orcharding, larger-scale CSA farm, traditional bread baking).

Length of Internship:

  1. 2-3 interns for mid-March/early April through October 31.
  2. Possibility of 1 or 2 interns for summer positions, June 1-August 31.

Stipend: $500/month
Lodging: included in internship; own room, shared kitchen and bathroom; on-site living required
