Transitioning to Organic:  Starting with the Seeds!

NOFA-NY Field Day on August 27th

Naples, August 2013—NOFA-NY is hosting a field day on August 27th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at at Fruition Seeds (across the street from 7920 Hickory Bottom Rd, Naples, NY 14512).  Please join NOFA-NY for a workshop entitled Transitioning to Organic:  Starting with the Seeds!

Join Fruition Seeds at their Naples certified organic farm and seed facilities to see how they grow, harvest, and distribute organic, regionally adapted seeds.  This workshop will answer your questions on how to transition to organic while focusing on one of the most important parts of the equation--Seeds! Host farmers Petra Page-Matt and Matthew Goldfarb will show their organic seed growing fields and seed cleaning and packing warehouse, and demonstrate how they breed, cultivate, harvest, and clean their annual and biennial seed crops.  After learning how Fruition Seeds grows and handles their organic seed, the farmers will discuss why they chose to grow organic, how regionally adapted seeds produced through organic growing practices differ from conventional seeds, how these seeds help add resilience to farming systems, and how they choose organic seed growers to partner with.  This field day concludes with a session with certification representatives from NOFA-NY LLC who will discuss organic certification, how to become certified, and answer questions about sourcing organic seed and transitioning to organic.   Supported by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Market’s NYS Crop Insurance and Risk Management Education Program
