Over the past few days, I have received emails from many Biodynamic Association members asking about my safety and the safety of others in the Northern California biodynamic community. There are still many unknowns but will share what I currently know here.
I am safely evacuated from my land and staying with friends who are farmers in Petaluma. Everything on my grandmother's land near Calistoga burned to the ground, but all of my family members are safe. The land in the mountains near Santa Rosa where I live and work is surrounded by several of the fires and in danger, but not yet burned.
I have heard that much of Frey Vineyards has been burned, but all of the Frey family members are safe. This MNN article talks about the damage to Frey and other wineries.
I have also heard from former BDA Board member Paula Gaska that her husband Adam has been personally battling fires at Heart Arrow Ranch where their farm business is located, and their land, buildings, and animals are still in danger.
Gloria Decater has let me know that she and Live Power Farm are currently safe, but with fires burning south of them near Willits.
As far as I know, Summerfield Waldorf School is currently safe but near to the fire in Santa Rosa, and Benziger Winery is safe but near the fires in Glen Ellen and Kenwood.
The fires continue to burn and spread, with little containment. The National Wildfire Coordinating Group has the best current map of the fires that I have found.
If you have information about any other people or land in the biodynamic community that may be affected by the fires, please post a reply below.
