Sustainable Settings has an immediate opening for a mechanically experienced Farm/Ranch Intern. Sustainable Settings is a 240-acre ranch in the beautiful Roaring Fork Valley, 10 minutes to the south of Carbondale. We are a research and demonstration site that grows vegetables and proteins using biodynamic principles which are regenerative to the soils and ranch ecosystems. In our stewardship we are determined to discover what is possible from both a physical and metaphysical perspective in agriculture.
We produce healthy food and milk available through our CSA and herdshare program or at our Ranch Store. Our practices include field and hoop house production and 100 % grass fed beef, lamb, and pork. Additional micro enterprise development includes expanding our pork production, broiler and layer chickens, medicinal herb production and an onsite farm store.
Qualified candidates must have:
• Be able to work a tractor and other machinery.
• Have carpentry and machinery repair skills.
• Willing to learn to work with ranch livestock. Dairy cows, pigs, sheep, chickens.
• A driver's license and reliable transportation,
• Be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
• Be able to work long days outside in all weather conditions.
We seek a seasonal, full time intern to help our herdsman oversee general ranch management including a small intensive vegetable operation as well as a holistic rotational grazing livestock operation.
The position runs April 1 to November 15 with 2 days off each week. There is possibility for extending into the winter season. Tending of livestock care, field irrigation, and vegetable operation will be shared with our 4 other interns.
The position entails diverse tasks over the vegetable and livestock operations as well as ranch management that will include flood irrigating fields, cutting, baling & stacking hay. This work will be done under the direction of and in cooperation with the farm manager.
