Upper Midwest Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training (CRAFT)
The Upper Midwest CRAFT (Region 1: northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin) is an alliance of more than 30 biodynamic and organic farmers in the Chicago, Madison, and Milwaukee areas. The purpose of the program is to pool the region's resources to strengthen a farm intern's awareness of the nature and requirement of farming/gardening.
Each season begins with an Intern Orientation Program held at the Michael Fields Agricultural Institute in April. Monthly workshops are then held at area farms on a variety of topics; plus a calendar of other regional farm events is distributed to all participants. Interns are encouraged to develop a deeper understanding of a different operation through one-week exchanges on other farms. The intern year closes with a Transition Workshop, which provides closure to the intern experience and addresses questions of how to continue in farming or a related field.
