We offer a one-year apprenticeship program on our diversified biodynamic farm.
We are raising beef and dairy cattle, pigs, turkeys, chicken, bees and horses. We grow vegetables both summer and winter for our vegetable CSA (community supported agriculture) – a program where people become a member of our garden for the season and pick up their vegetable share weekly. We are in the process of building a cheese-making facility as well as a farm store. Our farm is located in the idyllic New England landscape of forests and stonewalls in southeastern Connecticut – while it is only 10 miles to the coast and both New York City and Boston are not even 2 ½h away.
Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of farm life by participating in the daily chores. This includes feeding and caretaking of the livestock, pasture rotation and management, seed propagation, transplanting, weeding, mulching, greenhouse management, harvesting and post harvest preparation as well as the use of biodynamic preparations. We hold weekly meetings and offer discussion groups – but expect a high level of self motivated involvement in study activities.
Apprentices are accommodated in their own shared house, where they have to prepare their own meals and organize their own household. Furthermore, we provide access to a share of our vegetables and a small stipend.
We are accepting apprentices year round, with a new vacancy coming up this October/November. We are looking for self-motivated individuals with a strong work ethic who are considering a career in farming.
Please submit a résumé and a letter which describes your motivation to work on our farm to Julia and David Smagorinsky, Woodbridge Farm, 30 Woodbridge Road, Salem, CT 06420; (860)889-5797; firstname.lastname@example.org.
