Stephen Payne has a B.S. in business marketing from Central Connecticut State University. He began farming soon after college in New York State before apprenticing at Hidden Villa Environmental Education Center near Palo Alto, California. He then was a multi-crop market-garden business owner for 5 years in the Sierra Nevada foothills. He became the Sacramento Waldorf School farmer in 2001, where he currently leads the farm-based education program for K-10th grades and runs the operations of the 3.5-acre farm. He has presented garden-based workshops at the Western Waldorf Teachers Conference at Rudolph Steiner College in Fair Oaks, California, and is an active member of the Farm-Based Educators Inspired by Anthroposophy (FBEIBA) collective.
