Verna Kragnes and her husband, Rick Hall, started Philadelphia Community Farm's CSA in 1990, the same year Dan Guenthner and Margaret Pennings started Common Harvest Farm on rented land near the Twin Cities. These two farms now anchor the Standing Cedars Farm and River Greenway, a six-mile state natural area along the St. Croix River south of Osceola, Wisconsin, which is home to a total of four CSAs. Verna and Rick share their household with two adults with developmental disabilities. Verna currently serves on the board of the St. Croix River Association and has been working to develop economic models for farmland ownership and natural area preservation supportive of community and farmers. Modest season extension launched a spring share in 2000 with first deliveries around April 15. The photo shows a New Year's eve salad from the greenhouse this past December.
