The Nature Institute is running a five day intensive from June 8 to 12 that is a collaboration between us and the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco, California. The course, which will be at The Nature Institute, is designed as a graduate level introduction to the practice of Goethean phenomenology of nature and is crafted specifically for the Ph.D. students of the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness program at CIIS.

We are opening this opportunity to a few additional participants.

Please contact us at info@natureinstitute.org if you are interested in attending, and we will get back to you soon.

Goethean Phenomenology of Nature: Introductory Practice Intensive

Goethe wrote that “if we want to behold nature in a living way, we must follow her example and become as mobile and malleable as nature herself” and that “every new object, clearly beheld, opens up a new organ in us.” This in person, practice intensive workshop invites participants to move beyond the static, object-like abstractions of contemporary thought towards a fluid, dynamic, and transformative way of perceiving and thinking. In order to take up what Goethe called “delicate empiricism,” we need a willingness to confront ingrained habits of thought that prevent us from experiencing nature as creative activity. More importantly, we must learn to attend to natural phenomena with patience and persistence. We could speak of practicing faithfulness to the concrete appearance. This week long workshop is an intensive introduction to this practice.
