Supply chains — it’s been all over the news this last year. Prior to that, most people probably didn’t know what a supply chain meant. Now it’s become a part of everyday language. But how can consumers help support building better, regenerative supply chains? Purchasing Biodynamic® products is one key way.
Unfortunately, it's not always that easy. There are not as many Biodynamic farms as there are companies that want to use Biodynamic ingredients. So the market demand is here, but we need to connect the dots – by helping companies find the farmers. The Biodynamic Demeter Alliance is working to grow more Biodynamic farms, and we are also working to connect companies with the farmers that grow Biodynamic crops (or milk, or fibers). In other words, we can help companies build Biodynamic supply chains.
This can be very helpful for companies, and even more helpful for farmers because the Biodynamic Demeter Alliance is committed to supporting small farms, and particularly farms owned by Black, Indigenious, and People of Color (BIPOC) and/or women-owned farms. Many of the Biodynamic practices have their roots in Indigenous land practices, and so working with tribal communities who are wanting to develop businesses and grow Biodynamic crops is a priority for the Alliance. We are also hoping to share the lessons we learn from building more sustainable supply chains with farmers and business owners via workshops and online discussions. By developing supply chains that focus on small producers, and support greater diversity and market access for farmers who have historically been sidelined in supply chains, we believe we can create a stronger, more resilient economy, not to mention increasing the number of Biodynamic farms in the United States. We also think connecting companies directly to the farmers that grow their ingredients will make companies stronger, plus it increases the happiness factor of company employees tremendously!
