Back in mid-late 1990’s there were numerous Demeter certified Biodynamic producers on multiple islands including Kauai, Hawaii, Molokai, Maui, and Oahu. In 1998 there was a gathering of Hawaiian Biodynamic farmers at Pu’u O Hoku Ranch on Molokai attending a workshop led by Peter Proctor from New Zealand.
Among the topics Peter covered was a deep dive into the making and use of the Biodynamic preparations. Interesting to Peter’s presentation of the Biodynamic preparations as one working with Biodynamics in tropical and subtropical climates was the subject of how to make and use them in tropical and sub-tropical agricultural practice.
Hosting this event was Pu’u O Hoku Ranch and the ranch managers at the time Ellen Sugawara and Jack Spruance. Ellen studied under Alan Chadwick in California in the 1970’s and from there she and her partner Jack found their way to Molokai where Ellen quietly and brilliantly made the Biodynamic preparations and provided them to farmers. This gathering in 1998 was an inauguration of a group of Hawaii based Biodynamic farmers.
Over the past year Ellen passed over and this catalyzed a discussion on how to carry Ellen’s work and the 1998 inaugural event forward.
