Dairy Apprentice Position Available on Grazing Dairy

Moore Farms is a 425 acre certified 100% grassfed, certified organic farm in central NY that has been owned and operated by the same family for over 200 years. Its 60 cows are milked seasonally, calving in spring and dry in winter. Holistic Planned Grazing practices on this perennial grass farm focus on meeting the needs of the cattle, pastures and soil for optimal health. The dairy is part of a broader organic farming community where young farmers are taking over management of their families' farms. Several organic dairies and an organic feed mill are within minutes of the farm.

The farmers have experience training and mentoring beginning dairy farmers. Most of their past apprentices now operate their own farms. Both farmers are Master Graziers with the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship program, a nationally-accredited apprenticeship under the federal government. Graduating DGA apprentices earn Journey Dairy Grazier status, which is recognized by the USDA and helps with access to funding through Beginning Farmer loans and grants. DGA apprenticeship is grounded in hands on learning with accomplished grazing mentors, and requires 2 years and 4,000 hours of training - 3,712 hours of on-the-job learning, and 288 hours in academics (most available online via distance learning). DGA apprenticeship is optional for the apprentice position available at Moore Farms.

Work responsibilities vary during the season, and daily activities may include: milking, feeding, moving cattle, setting up and taking down temporary electric fencing, weedwacking and shifting cattle paddocks.Work hours also vary, with more in the spring/summer, less in the late fall when cows are only milked once/day, and more limited in winter when the herd is dry. Pay starts at $10/hour and is higher for those with experience. A valid driver's license and the ability to life 50 lbs. are necessary. Housing may be available. Ideal candidates are self-starters who enjoy working outside in all kinds of weather and already have some farm and milking experience.
