We are seeking help with our small humble 19-year-old BD farm on Maui in Hawaii. Our mission and vision create socially therapeutic programs including housing, organic gardening, and the arts for our Maui community, including adults with developmental disabilities. Our 1.29-acre biodynamic farm is on old Hawaiian Land with Kuleana (local water rights from Waihe'e River) and provides an accessible, serene and inspirational environment. www.lokelaniohana.org Thank you for your potential interest in joining our community.
Requirements:
Biodynamic experience required, training is good and/or certification preferred. Mature with good social and communication skills.A true team person. Equality, and teamwork is essential.Excellent communication skills with people.
Good management and teaching skills.Well organized.Able to work in a warm, humid, and/or rainy environment. Open to learning about native plants.
Expectations (i.e. responsibilities)
Coordinating work with the Biodynamic “BD” calendar, implementing overall BD practices, maintaining soil health & fertility, planting, harvesting, compost building, preparations (we use Josephine Porter preps), pest management and record keeping.
Manage weekly farm meeting and work (ie assessment and purchasing of farm supplies, working with BD calendar (team effort).
Interviewing, training, and supporting farm crew. Depending on training and or certification, host an internship program. There is space for two interns to live and learn.
Leading harvest, washing, boxing and delivery of produce for market and individuals (possible CSA).
Knowledge of irrigation systems. Maintenance of the irrigation system (water comes from Waihe’e river, then ditch) that enters a 15,000-gallon water tank with sand filters.
Removal of invasive species (cane, pokey weed, etc.) Work is 5-6 days per week.
Network with Maui community, attend Maui Farm Union meetings, set up at possible farmers markets or begin a small CSA.
What we Provide (i.e., benefits)
Private room, utilities, basic staples and a monthly stipend. One could begin with a work trade of 25 hours a week or begin work with a paid position of 40 hours a week, teaching interns and classes to the community, including people with special needs. The. level of BD training, experience and ability to run an internship program and teach classes and lead tours, will determine the stipend.
There is a communal farm kitchen, outdoor enclosed shower (see the stars at night!) and bathroom.
Unpaid vacation time is open, as needed.Study of Rudolph Steiner's work available with community educational leader. Farm truck for farm use.Additional Information (e.g. specific training offered, etc.)
There will be a one-month orientation period provided by present farm manager, who is BD trained but not certified. Continued teamwork available from family on the land working part time now.
