Scientific Projects in Biodynamic Agriculture in Regional Universities of Mexico and Central America

by Heberto Rodas

This paper, titled "The Stability of Static Biodynamic Compost from Remnants of Regional Crops," documents the addition of biodynamic preparations to static compost. Research was conducted by Heberto Rodas and colleagues in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, and this paper marks the first biodynamic research ever published in a scientific journal in Mexico. You can read this work online here or in the pdfs (in Spanish and English) attached to this post. The second paper, entitled "Biodynamic Preparations in Static Composting Piles from Nopal and Moringa Crop Residues," is part of the special issue of the Open Agriculture Magazine, which emerged from the First International Conference on Research in Biodynamics, and will be published in the next few weeks. Below, Rodas shares his experiences and perspectives:

If I hadn’t finished this doctoral research project in biodynamic agriculture, I would still doubt that it was possible. Unfortunately, the scientific papers published can’t reflect in their words the deep approach and fundaments of biodynamic preparations that were used in the compost and are instead only able to portray material results. However, a holistic statistical method was used (multivariate analysis), where many measurable variables (physical, chemical, and biological characteristics) as possible were related, instead of using a traditional statistic, where frequently a treatment effect is evaluated on a single characteristic (univariate analysis). The statistical method reflected the connection between different elements (correlation between variables) of a holistic system and the individual characteristics. Thus, it’s possible to recognize the whole elements that interact and the ways in which they favor one another.

The first scientific paper, prior to its publication, was the subject of criticism regarding “measurement mistakes,” “lack of fundaments,” and “missing aspects,” that the laboratory equipment would never be able to compliment. Yet, the ultimate acceptance and publication of this scientific work that considers human consciousness as one of its cornerstones is a very important step. Through this, the possibility opens for future scientific work where humans seek a greater connection with their surroundings, from physical to spiritual.

Because of these unique scientific results, it’s more feasible to have access in the universities and show our results based on a “conscious science.” The holistic approach is essential, as is the need to observe with awareness and respect for each organism/element of our systems.

Within research institutions, there is a feeling of being alone coupled with the feeling of existing in a region where ancestral knowledge (Aztec and Maya) has been lost and changed by an agriculture that looks at farms as production machines. I hope to see the resurgence and the connection that these ancestral cultures also had with their surroundings and cosmos. Currently, there is a need for support for more students who wish to leave the conventional system and are interested in organic/biodynamic agriculture research. This becomes a very difficult task, but from my point of view, an indispensable one as it serves as a rescue and reorientation of new generations towards a conscious agriculture.

Heberto Rodas Gaitán, originally from Guatemala, is a professor and doctoral degree student in agricultural sciences at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León in Mexico. His research is supported by the National Council on Science and Technology and focuses on biodynamic compost development (as compared with the traditional composting method) and the effect on regional crops growth. Heberto began working in biodynamic agriculture in 2013 in Germany. After working a couple of years managing biodynamic greenhouses and publishing some articles (with a scientific approach) in various journals, he decided to return to Latin America and continue working in biodynamic agriculture there. Currently, he is supporting bachelor students from Mexico and Guatemala. All research projects, developed together with the students, focus on organic/biodynamic agriculture. The various research projects he is carrying out are developed from small- to large-scale dimensions and consider universities, organic/biodynamic certified farms, and conventional fields that are interested in the agrochemical use elimination.
